Hardening & tempering

Descripción: Hardening and tempering is a two-step heat treatment process for steel that makes it both strong and tough. Hardening involves heating steel to a specific temperature and then rapidly cooling it ("quenching") to create a very hard but brittle material. Tempering then involves reheating the hardened steel to a lower temperature and holding it there, which reduces its hardness, increases its toughness (resistance to fracture), and relieves internal stresses from the hardening process. This allows for a desired balance of strength and toughness for a specific application.
